Melissa Atkins
Melissa became interested in justice and equality issues while pursuing her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. Majoring in history nurtured Melissa's strong belief in equality and fairness and her desire to bring about positive changes within Canada and beyond. This led Melissa to pursue a law degree at the University of Western Ontario.
Early in Melissa's second year of law school she decided to focus on labour and employment law. This field of law was where Melissa felt she could make a difference and advocate with passion on behalf of her clients. With the mentoring of Professor Michael Lynk, Brian Shell's former articling student from USWA days, Melissa absorbed herself in as many labour-related moots, activities and classes as possible.
During her third year at Western Law, Melissa was elected to the Labour Law Society Executive and worked on a number of projects, including the annual labor law conference. It was also during Melissa's last year that she won the Ted Wohl Prize in Labour Law for a comparative paper on employee data protection laws within the EU and North America. What Melissa remains most proud of is her work at London's Community Legal Services, where she was able to help many members of the London community as a law student.
Melissa's choice to join Shell Lawyers was simple. The firm shares the same strong values and commitment to social justice. Respect for equality-seeking groups and individuals, and those struggling with disadvantage - in short - the advancement of equality and human rights is unparalleled at Shell Lawyers.
Melissa lives in Toronto with her family, and enjoys sports, the outdoors and spending time with friends in her few minutes of spare time.

"Working at Shell Lawyers does not allow me to lose sight of my values and beliefs. The work I do here is a constant reinforcement of why I entered the practice of law."
